Kickass Torrents

Kickass Torrents (KAT) originated in 2008 as a torrent indexing platform founded by an individual with the pseudonym "Kickass". It quickly became one of the most popular torrent sites ranking among the top 100 websites with over 50 million monthly visits at its peak.

KAT enabled users to easily search, discover and download torrent files across diverse content categories like movies, TV, music etc. One of its key innovations was verified torrents - an internal review system that tested and marked trusted torrents to enhance safety.

Technical Features

  • Torrents pulled from torrent communities rather than private trackers. Millions of torrents indexed from crowdsourced methods.
  • Implementation of magnet links for quick direct downloading without .torrent files.
  • Display of essential torrent health indicators like seeders, leechers, trackers etc. to assess download credibility.
  • Advanced search tools to filter and manage torrents by category, size, date added etc.
  • Open public trackers that connected users to diverse peer sources instead of operating its own private tracker.
  • Active forums that fostered discussions and engagement within the torrent community.

Despite KAT's immense popularity, copyright concerns led to authorities seizing its domain multiple times. The alleged owner, Artem Vaulin, was also arrested in a high-profile incident in 2016. Nevertheless, KAT's devoted community persists in keeping the site accessible via proxies and mirrors.
